They Sow the Wind and Reap the Whirlwind: How Big Government Abets Abortion

The supporters of Obamacare rave about how we need to do what the Europeans have done since World War II:  Universal healthcare.  Before jumping into the universal healthcare wagon, have they studied whether European universal healthcare has been a success?  I will bet they have not.  Let me begin by giving you a simple example.  My 80-year-old cousin in Italy, where there is universal health care, has been unable to walk properly for over five years.  Her problem can be corrected by surgery, but she has been waiting for five years to schedule such surgery.  Just this month, she was finally scheduled for surgery.  Two days before surgery, they called to postpone it for another week.  When the day came for surgery, she got another call canceling the surgery until further notice.

In speaking with my relatives on my last trip there last July, they say that if you need quick healthcare you need to go to a private doctor and pay, otherwise, anything but emergencies have to wait until the system is ready to take you.  Ask any Englishman the same question and see what he/she tells you, or a Canadian for that matter.  Consider this about the Canadian health care system.  The simple truth is universal health care does not work. Click here to hear what an English member of Parliament, Daniel Hannan, says about English healthcare.

What does this have to do with abortion you may ask?  Let’s take the current blow-up between the Catholic Bishops and President Obama over his order that Catholic institutions would have to provide sterilization and contraceptives to all their employees, forcing them to violate church teaching.  The problem is that when you go for big government, big government will decide what to give you, whether you like it or not.  The result is tyrannical pronouncements like the Obama HHS directive just described.  The Catholic Bishops brought this upon themselves to a certain degree; they were in support of Obamacare in the beginning.  Now, as Reverend Wright would say “the chickens have come home to roost.”  Simply put, if you want big government like Obamacare, this is the type of behaviour you will get.

They will be more bad news.  If the church can be forced to provide contraceptive and sterilization services today, why could it not be required to provide abortion services at a later time?  As my favorite philosopher, Forrest Gump would say “stupid is as stupid does.”

This is the blindness in liberal Christian/Catholic belief that big government is the answer.  Liberal Christians have adopted the socialistic model of Liberation Theology which promotes big government as a panacea.  In short, if you swim with the sharks, sooner or later the sharks will eat you.  With big government in charge, who is to say who will get medical aid in the later years of your life?  Given the inefficiency of anything government does, do you trust big government with your health?  Your life depends on it.  I’m not willing to risk my life on it.
